EU pins hope on Norway's raw materials

Norway has discovered a huge deposit of critical raw materials. This could make the EU less dependent on China and Russia and boost the bloc’s energy transition. DW’s Mikhail Bushuev has this exclusive report.

I think there’s a good chance that the Norwegian government will intervene and nationalize Norge Mining, or at least secure the rights for the minerals (if that is something they can even do?).

I found an NRK article from September mentioning interest in a state-owned company to manage these resources (similar to Petoro) from the region’s mayor:

Verdiene er så store at Eigersund-ordfører Odd Stangeland (Ap) vil ha staten på banen for å forvalte verdiene på samme måte som oljeressursene forvaltes.

– Jeg etterlyser et tydeligere eierskap fra staten. Jeg skulle ønske at vi hadde et «Minoro», et mineralenes Petoro, som satt klar og sikret fellesskapets interesser i de verdiene som ligger under bakken.

Stangeland viser til hvordan vi regulerte oljeressursene, og hvordan staten har sikret seg vannkraften. Han mener vi sikre oss de verdiene som ligger i mineralene.

– Dette bør vi gjøre på eiersiden, men kanskje også på operatørsiden med et «mineralenes Equinor» der vi sikrer oss at kompetansen bygges i Norge og verdiene blir her.

Thats good to hear, hopefully it goes through because those are the publics recourses, not some god damn private company.
